Welcome
to our NHS Faculty Members Tribute Page
I shall begin my part on our Tribute to NHS Faculty by
expressing my appreciation in honoring our unique genius, profound
critic, creative storyteller, and melodious NHS teachers from past
to present.
No words of mine will deepen our love or enrich our
understanding of the great teachers we are gathered here to honor.
But let me choose our subject for today, "The Memory of our Unsung
NHS Heroes," and we want to honor today certain school people who
were active in behalf of our beloved Novaliches High School in those
far away days who where often overworked and underappreciated. Let
this be a part of our tradition, cherished by generations of
teachers and instilled in many decades of young talented students -
the fruits of all their hard work.
It is commendable that at this critical time in the history of
our public school we are remembering an incident in their infancy
that has enriched the cultural life of every high school students in
NHS. I hope to pay tribute to the nature of educational ideals &
acquaint you with the warm personalities who have been the glory and
the strength of our alma mater. A recurring theme throughout will be
one of looking ahead, of walking away from this page with a
transparent and encompassing awareness about the importance of
teaching and its future in Novaliches High School….
This page will become a place to honor those teachers who
touched our lives. I’m sure most of us have had one or two
special teachers who have touched us deeply and changed the course
of our lives. Some of these teachers know it, but many do not.
This is a place to immortalize them and give them the
recognition, honor and respect they truly deserve.
If you would like to have someone listed here, simply send me
an email at nhsqcalumni@gmail.com. If you are lucky enough to
have a photo of your special teacher, send it as an attachment and I
will display it along with your comments.
(FYI: We reserve the right to select which submissions to
publish and to edit comments as we feel best suits the needs of
NHSOC site.)
To all of you unsung heroes of NHS, this tribute is for YOU!!!
Thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts…
The Memory of our
Unsung NHS Heroes…
Over the years, we have all recalled with fond memories those
teachers who gave unselfishly of their time and effort to mold us
into the people we are today.
We are honored to dedicate this page to those wonderful
individuals who dedicated their lives to the profession of educating
students. We extend to each of you our deepest appreciation, and
hold you in the highest regard.
May your efforts be rewarded by the caliber of people, we are
today -- and may we, as former students, always bestow upon you the
dignity, honor and respect you so rightfully deserve!
We SALUTE you!

HAPP
"HAPPY MOTHER'S
DAY!!!"
"HAPPY
MOTHER'S DAY!!!"
Mother's Day this year is this
Sunday, May 13th 2006.
NHS On-line Community would like to express our heartfelt thanks
to all mothers for their unconditional love and guidance.
Likewise, we take time to recognize the many mothers who are
supporting their brave sons and daughters in the army, and the
many others who are themselves serving proudly in defense of one’s
nation’s freedom and security. Your service and sacrifice reflect
the best for a great majority. You and your loved ones are in our
thoughts and prayers.
To all Mothers like myself, and Grandmothers here at NHS On-line
Community, "Happy Mothers' Day!"
This is our special day where we get rewarded for all the
time we have spent in our lives reminding and making sure that all
of the family birthdays, Christmas, Fathers' Day, and all the
other important days in our families' lives are properly
acknowledged & celebrated. We truly deserve this day! We have
earned it!
May this year’s Mother’s Day draw us all closer to our moms and of
course our whole families!
A Mother's day Tribute to NHS Faculty Member Mrs. Dorcas Serrano Bote
Batch 1969 (& Family)
In the Picture
Below: Mrs. Dorcas Serrano Bote and Family
(May,
2006. Niaga Falls, Canada)

On this Mother's Day weekend, there could anything be more
appropriate than to honor a special mother, a highly respected
teacher, and for more than four decades (both as a student &
teacher) made an enormous impact across the entire Novaliches High
School family.
Please join NHS On-line Community
in celebrating Mother’s Day this May 13th, with a tribute to Mrs.
Dorcas Serrano Bote Batch 1969 also a faculty member since 1978.
To those closest to her, Dorcas can best be described by
simply saying “she cares”. She cares about her family, and the
people at Novaliches High School she considers as family whether
she works directly with them or not. She has a vast wealth of
knowledge and experience, and is always willing to share it; to
give of her time, to act as a mentor or an advisor; helps to get
the job done and makes others look good. But perhaps most of all
though, as a wonderful mother she passes her very own NHS legacy
to her children, who are also proud NHS alumni themselves.
"MEET THE BOTE FAMILY"
An old saying goes, “The family
that prays together, stays together”, yet the
multi-talented Bote family goes beyond that and if a new adage
should be adopted, I'm sure it would be,
“The Bote family that sings
together achieves together.” They not only can sing well
but they are also quite a family of achievers. It may be sheer
influence over each other or perhaps genetic in nature. Sure
whatever it is, the Bote family must be all up when God showered
the earth with superb talents and qualities. And what makes them
more admirable is that the list may be endless and their warm
sense of community service is just one of them, coupled with the
real sense of a caring family and a magnanimous parental figure
at the helm. They all embody the stellar qualities and
professionalism that make them stand head and shoulders above
others and truly worthy of us knowing them just a little bit
more.
"MEET THE MOTHER"
I am sure you will all agree that a mother is a child's first
teacher and affects a child's life like few others can.
Effective mothers like Mrs. Dorcas Serrano Bote inspires her
children to love themselves and others, work hard, make healthy
choices, serve causes greater than self, and achieve their
dreams.
I guess it's about time we
finally meet her...

DORCAS
MARTIN SERRANO graduated 3rd honorable mention in
Novaliches Elementary School and in 1969, graduated 4th
honorable mention in Novaliches High School. She pursued a
teaching career after graduating in 1973 with a degree in BS
Education major in Math. She likewise earned a CAR Master of
Arts in Education in Mathematics from National Teachers

Sr. High School and transferred to Flora A. Ylagan High

blessed to have her in the midst. To narrate her many
achievements, she has been recognized in NHS as the top
section mathematics teacher for juniors; designated as the
trainer for Mathematics Student Contestants for Division to
Regional Competitions; Mother Mathematics Club Adviser; one
of the Ten Most Outstanding Teachers in 2003 & was a member

Now, let’s talk
about an achiever marrying an achiever…
Dorcas married LOPE L. BOTE in 1976 where they met as church
mates at Maranatha First Evangels Church.
"MEET THE FATHER"
LOPE
L. BOTE is the General Manager and Owner of Bote-Alvarez
Accounting Office. He was the president of NHS-PTA from
1997-1999. One of his most popular projects in his 3-year term
was the “Bote Bridge”- the bridge connecting Marcos and Quezon
Buildings. He was also the auditor of NHS PTA from 1993-1996.
After finishing his term as president, Lope devoted his free
time, energy and valuable business acumen to the Quezon City
Parents-Teachers-Community Association where he's serving
District II as City-wide Auditor up to present. There’s just
simply no stopping him.
And now, let’s
talk about “achievers” having “achievers” as children.
"MEET THE CHILDREN"

Christine, Blossom, Mike & Divine, picture taken at Whistler,
Canada
BOY. Born in 1977 but
died shortly after, due to premature delivery.

BLOSSOM
FAITH.
Born in 1978. She graduated in NHS in 1994
with the 1st Honorable Mention tucked under her belt. Other than
being Hi ‘Yer of the Year, she was also the News Editor of the
school organ, Ang Talisman/The Reservoir. In college, she went
to Polytechnic University of the Philippines as Quezon City
government scholar. In 1998, she graduated cum laude with a
degree in B.S. Accounting and passed the CPA Board Exams that
same year.

Blossom worked for 2 years as Auditor Staff 2 at Philippine
Commercial Capital, Inc. and was then hired as Senior
Auditor for SMART Philippines from 2001 to 2005. In 2006, SMART
promoted her as Audit Supervisor for Operations.
Last January 26, out of the 31,000 Audit and Financial
professionals from all over the world who took the 4-part CIA
exam, Blossom is one of the lucky 4,000 (171 of them are
Filipinos) who earned their designation as Certified Internal
Auditors, the only globally accepted certification for internal
auditors.

CHRISTINE
HOPE.
Born in 1980. In 1996, she graduated Salutatorian in NHS. She
was the Feature Editor of the school organ, Deputy Corps Sponsor,
Hi-Y Club President, Most Outstanding SAFPI student & Ms. Faith
in the Ms. Alma Mater Quest. After NHS and as a Quezon City
government scholar just like her older sister, she attended U.P Manila,
where she earned her B.S. in Public Health in 2000. She passed
the DOST and SM Scholarship Examinations and in 2000, passed the
Medical Technologist Licensure Exam. May of 2005
she had earned her Masteral Degree. She worked as a
Research Asst. in UP Manila from 2000-2001. Presently, Christine
is working at Philippine Heart Center as Medical Technologist 2.
 DIVINE
LOVE .
As if one is not enough, a twin sister is out there to double
the achievements and provide twin delights for the Bote Family.
Divine graduated in NHS also in 1996. She was the Logistics and
Supplies Officer, NHS Corps of Sponsors & was awarded Choir
Master of the Year Batch 1996. After NHS, she attended
Polytechnic University of the Philippines where she earned B.S.
in Business Administration (Major in Marketing) in 2001. She
earned her master’s degree in National College of Business and
Arts in 2004, and took her 2nd College Degree - B.S. in
Accountancy - Junior Standing from the same school. She must be
one who never wants to give up schooling. Her twin traits
definitely shone with her twin degrees.
She worked as Merchandising and Administrative Assistant for
Walter Mart Supermaket in 2000, from 2000-2002 she had served as Sales &
Marketing Executive at Jo-Na’s International, Inc and currently
working as Administrative Manager for Bote-Alvarez Accounting
Office since 2002.

MEET THE YOUNGEST BOTE"
Some of you may well remember Mike, as our 3rd Forum Moderator
in March of 2005. He has been one of the most valuable posters
at NHSOC Message Board, since I've first created our site in
December of 2004. Like in the Bote household, he was the
youngest on our first batch of Forum Moderators back then, but a
wonderful addition indeed to the Moderating Team.
Now, it brings me great pleasure
to reintroduce Mike to all of you…
Born
in 1983. Mike received tons of awards during his graduation at
NHS in 1999. He received the Senate Award for Academic and
Leadership Excellence, Editor-in-Chief for The Reservoir, Best
in English, Student Leader of the Year, Hi-‘Yer of the Year,
Journalist of the Year, Essayist of the Year, Excellence in
Science Awardee, Performer of the Year, Best in Extra Curricular
Activities, President of Senior Assembly, Mathematics Club,
Successful Achievement Club, and in YMCA was among the six High
School Delegates sent by the Philippines to YMCA Leadership
Conference held in Chiba, Japan. And you think he was all
extra-curricular? Think again, as he was the Class Valedictorian
when he graduated from NHS. It would be quite interesting to
know how Mike was able to fit all those medals into his neck
during graduation day.
He attended U.P. Diliman with these strings of achievement: full
scholarship by the QC Gov’t; Japanese Monbusho Scholarship
Examination passer; Phi Kappa Phi International Honor Society
Awardee; Champion-Awitan ’99; Bronze Medalist-UP Aquathon
(swim-run) competition; Most Outstanding Student for 2002 and
2003 by Campus Advance (Association of Colleges and Universities
in the Philippines). And again, to top all these, he graduated
c*m laude in U.P. with a B.S. in Economics degree in 2003. In
December 2006, he became a Dean’s List graduate of the
Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Program of the De La Salle
University Graduate School of Business. And only last April, he
received admission offers from three out of three business
schools in British Columbia he applied to. Among his offers, he
chose to attend the University of British Columbia’s 15-month
Master of Business Administration Program commencing this July
30, 2007.
He currently works at Green Cross, Inc. since 2003 where he was
promoted in January 2005 from Area Sales Manager for Regions 2 &
4 to Regional Sales Manager for North Luzon Operations (Regions
I, II, and III).
At quite a young age, this man is definitely still going places.
"A
FAMILY IN SYNC"
"The
Botes" At A
Hawaiian Party at Winnipeg, Canada, picture taken last April,
2006
As if educational excellence is not enough for the Botes,
singing is another passion in action. The Sound Of Music is
perhaps one of the most popular musical films ever made -- a
wonderful story about the Von Trapps who took the family’s
hobby, singing, and turned it into a family profession. And
before long, the family singing group became quite a phenomenon.
Yet, the Von Trapps is not just a Hollywood creation. Like the
Botes, they are an actual family who took pride not in THE SOUND
OF MUSIC, but in their very own music, the same music that they
performed together as a family over the years.
The story of the Bote family could not be far different from the
story of the real von Trapps. The Botes, in such an elusive
moment, can transcend an ordinary performance and feel in great
harmony not only to their music but also come in sync with each
other as a family. It certainly won't come as a surprise if they
do become another family sensation very much like the Von Trapps
in real life!
So, how does Videoke-singing sound to the Botes? A lot! The
Botes, in fact, has their own professional-like set up of
Videoke at home (with approximately 9,000 songs). Their family
bonding is singing together while sipping a cup of their
favorite brewed coffee in between songs.
Still back to their string of achievements, Divine and Mike won
numerous singing competitions during their college years. Both
were campus singers even when they were still in NHS. In fact,
Mike was a bass 1 trainee of the internationally-recognized UP
Concert Chorus. He was also the assistant conductor of UP Himig
Chorale and UP ECOSOC Choir. Divine is a soprano member of Coro
Cantabile and even joined the choir’s 2005 and 2007 tour in
Europe, and 2006 tour in Asia.
The Botes are definitely in sync – in music and with each other!
Not only can they make wonderful harmony together but they also
have harmonious bonding time together.
And so does “Bote” now have a whole new meaning to us all? Try
to get a “bottle”, half-fill it with water, strike it with a
silver ware, and it will surely give off a beautiful, harmonious
sound, so much like the Botes we now learn to know.
One may ask, what is the Bote Family Philosophy?? Matthew 6:33;
“Seek Ye First the Kingdom of
God and His Righteousness and all these things shall be added
unto You…” The Bote's believe that all the things they
have accomplished comes from God. Without Him, they will be
nothing. To Him be all the Glory and Honor…
The true legacy that the Bote Family leaves to our dear alma
mater is one of generosity, concern for others, intellectual
curiosity, and esprit de corps. They are multi-talented yet
modest about their accomplishments. For their many academic
achievements and tireless-devotion to music & community service,
The Bote Family surely deserve our special recognition.
From all of us members of
Novaliches High School On-line Community, We say: "Mabuhay Bote
Family"!
And To Mrs. Dorcas Serrano Bote Batch 1969 (also NHS Faculty
Member), Happy Mother's Day!!!
We are all very proud of YOU!!"

Happy 60th Birthday to Mrs. Preciosa De Guzman
Dela Cruz (NHS Faculty Member)
By Chona Villafuerte-Go Batch 1986
On behalf of the Novaliches High School On-line
Community, I bring greetings to Mrs. Preciosa De
Guzman Dela Cruz (NHS Faculty Member) on her 60th
birthday today, May 8th.
Rolly Esguerra (IV-Makiling) Batch 74 wrote to
nhsqcalumni@gmail.com:
“Dear Chona, administrator/webmaster,
I would like to extend my gratitude to all those
involved in maintaining this website. Without your
group the success of the reunion of Batch 74 would
not be possible. And with this website; most of us
were able to get in touch with lost classmates and
friends.
As I have mentioned during the reunion. My fondest
memories are those years I had in High School and
I take great pride in saying I’m a graduate of
Novaliches High School QC. Solid kaming barkada
nung high school. Tawag sa amin eh Baltik and
company. Ferdie Alcid, Arnold Azana, Daniel Calub,
Egay Calindas, Cesar Dela Cruz, Rainier Cruz,
Myself (Rolly Esguerra), Rolly Rivera, Enrico
Tecson, Lucio Trinidad, Rey Maliwanag and Teddy
dela Cruz. Me Barkada kaming girls we considered
one of the boyz, namely Iting Ignacio, Precy
Poblete and Erlinda Manangkil. Favorite snack –
kropec; Favorite board game – squabble; Favorite
shoes – gamosa; Favorite teacher - Mam Preciousa
De La Cruz (De Guzman). BTW, could you post that
it’s her 60th birthday today. I called her up last
night and had a phone conversation for over an
hour. WE, Arnold and I together with some
classmates and friends are trying to surprise her
with a visit but Mam will not be available. So I
told mam that we will visit her lunchtime on May
21 after going to Pablik.
Have to say bye now.
Have a nice day. . .
Rolly Esguerra”
Like Rolly Esguerra Batch 1974 and I’m sure many
of us could relate, Mrs. Preciosa De Guzman Dela
Cruz has been one of the many NHS faculty
favorites of all times and yes, one of my very own
favorites!! True to her very name “Preciosa”, she
brings us all many precious and beautiful
memories. Her role as a teacher and mentor is very
much appreciated. As I recall her back on our
days, her advice and guidance have always been on
the mark and we have always counted upon her to
provide the criticism and vision that is necessary
to keep us on the right track. I’ve always
remember her as a teacher having the tact to coat
any advice she may have for us back then with
enough sugar to get us to listen. One does not
have to be around her very long to simply know
that she truly cares about her students. Being one
of the lucky few who have been on her class, I’d
say there are probably not many who can equal her
passion for improving the teaching and learning of
mathematics in our time. Her energy, insights and
understanding of the fundamental problems
associated with the math subject she teaches, are
just unparalleled. Her ability to make teachers
and students from a broad spectrum of abilities
feeling at home and comfortable working together
is simply wonderful to watch. What sets her apart
I guess from all others who share similar views is
that she places her words into action. She sets
the example and the standards that many of us can
only hope to emulate.
I’m truly delighted to join other alumni, faculty
and friends of NHSOC in this online tribute to
Mrs. Preciosa De Guzman Dela Cruz (NHS Faculty
Member) on the occasion of her 60th birthday, and
send all our best wishes for good health and for
her continued pleasures of the mind.
To Mrs. Preciosa De Guzman Dela Cruz you are a
true precious gem! Thank you so much for blazing
the trail at NHS, it has been so enjoyable and
rewarding for your students, like myself to
follow.

NHS On-line Community wishes Mrs. Emma Hortillo
(Former NHS Faculty from 1965-1990)
a Happy 74th Birthday!!!
By Chona Villafuerte-Go Batch 1986
As a member of NHS Class of 1986, I’m delighted
to join my classmates and fellow alumni in this
NHS On-line Community tribute on the occasion of
the 74th birthday of Mrs. Emma Hortillo our former
1st Year Section 1 Class Adviser and Pilipino
Teacher at Novaliches High School.
And on behalf of NHS On-line Community, I am
sending all our best wishes for good health and
for her continued pleasures of the mind.

To Ma’m Hortillo: You certainly has
afforded us some of our most important memories of
our high school years. Your guidance have been a
steady and sobering guide for what might be called
our “high school infancy then”; that is, our
freshman year of high school. At a time in our
high school lives when every decision seems to
bring more confusion and uncertainty, you have
shown us a way to think about high school and
education with a historical perspective instead of
with stress over the immediate.
Like most of our dearest teachers in NHS, the
ideas which you imparted and inculcated have never
lost their importance. I can say without fear of
contradiction that your wonderful teaching was and
is your great legacy and all of us who were given
the opportunity to be in your classes have carried
this legacy forward as I know you would have
wished.
Please accept along with those others my most
hearty congratulations on this your 74th birthday
Mam Hortillo.
Just earlier, I had a conversation with my fellow
batchmate Archie Penamante whose one of his
many favorite teachers in NHS is also Mrs Emma
Hortillo. I mentioned to Archie that I received an
email few days ago about Mrs. Emma Hortillo from
her very own son Mr. Edwin Hortillo. Let me share
with you all Archie's loving message about Ma'm
Hortillo as he says, “The only thing i remember
about Mrs. Emma Hortillo was, she is indeed a
benevolent mentor. I learned so much from her
about being always positive in life no matter what
it offers. "I SALUTE YOU" are the words I will
always remember from her when she uttered those to
us during first year high school and she said and
i quote..." I salute you if from first year until
you reach fourth year high school, you maintain
your section one!" I considered it as a big
challenge on my part. Not only that but, everytime
I come to her house and visits her, she is always
proud of showing her son's medals & trophies (I
believe it was Edwin) which he has received from
different school contests. I just hope that she
still remembers me....hehehehehe!!!
With
her exceptional prowess, experties and dedication
in her teaching FILIPINO subject (Sinag 1), I am
deeply honored and blessed to be one her students
who has gained so much love and respect for a
mentor like her....She is indeed a "remarkable
teacher" who has imparted so much of her time to
mold us and be truly called "Hope of the
Nation"...Mabuhay ka po Gng. Emma Hortillo!!!”
Here's a recent photo of Mrs. Emma Hortillo
(in Conneticut) together with her grand daughter
Felicia Emily (daughter of Edwin Hortillo) during
the holidays

Special thanks to Mr. Edwin Hortillo (son of Mrs. Emma
Hortillo) of course, for sharing her picture with
us. Also, Edwin is quite happy to tell everyone
that her mother is doing well and is currently
here in Connecticut (USA) where she now resides.
In fact, she is celebrating her 74th birthday
today
Saturday January 13th, 2007.
HAPPY 74TH
BIRTHDAY MRS. EMMA HORTILLO!!!
It is a great pleasure to learn that you have
reached your 74th birthday. Recalling the many
years that have passed since I first sat in your
class during Sinag I some twenty something years
ago, I am mindful of the extraordinary
contributions you have made to learning since
then, and especially to my own subsequent
development.
Best wishes on your 74th birthday Ma’m Hortillo. Like we
say to all our dearest teachers, we will always be
grateful to all of you for defending the scholarly
virtues of reason, honesty, and lucidity against
the tyranny of cant and system, the house of
intellect will be forever in your debt.
You have been an inspiration for many people during your
lifetime, and your influence extends way beyond
those who were lucky enough to be your students.
Indeed, I count myself as one of those “lucky
ones”.

A Birthday Tribute To Mrs. Guadalupe Fernandez Pablico
(Former NHS Mathematics Teacher from 1965-1989)
By Chona Villafuerte-Go NHS Batch 1986

Mommy Upeng with Enid, Jet(Enid's husband) and
Kevin (grandson)
On our first edition of NHS Faculty Tribute page
(December 1, 2005 Issue), I am deeply honored to
have an opportunity to share with all of you a
birthday tribute to one of the great teachers in NHS,
Mrs. Guadalupe Fernandez Pablico submitted by fellow
alumna, her loving daughter – Enid Pablico Casino.
Thanks Enid!!
Mrs. Guadalupe Pablico, was my teacher in
Mathematics Elective (Consumer's Math) on my
sophomore year. I don’t think I can remember what
has actually been taught in her class or how to
solve a math problem she certainly made it quite
easier for us during those days, but I learned so
much more about life from Mrs. Pablico, like most of
our loving teachers in NHS. She is a caring and a
compassionate human being.
Like some students if not all, I didn’t realized
then that I was learning from her at that time, as
she teaches all her students by her presence and
example.
Teaching is a special calling. People don’t become
teachers because they know they will make lots of
money or become one of those rich and famous. But
they have an opportunity to touch lives in ways that
can truly make a difference in thousands of people.
And true enough from their great efforts, all
careers spring.
Let us all join Enid Pablico-Casino
as she pays a birthday tribute to her loving Mom -
Mrs. Guadalupe Fernandez Pablico (Former NHS
Mathematics Teacher from 1965-1989).
Enid Pablico-Casino Graduated Class Salutorian of
her Batch 1985 in NHS and is the third among the
four children. She's currently working as a Manager
and Section Head at Call Center/Phonebanking, Retail
Banking Department 4 - Applications Development
Division 1 Information Technology Group at Equitable
PCI Bank in Makati.
The following is an email
message from Enid she wishes to share with all of
you on her mom's upcoming 73rd Birthday on December
12, 2005:
"Hello Everyone, I would
like to share the following article I wrote for my
mom when she was here with us in Makati for a week.
She's been bitten by our dog in Novaliches last
October 22, 2005. And since I am on my maternity
leave (D&C for blighted ovum), Jet and I, were the
ones who accompanied her to San Lazaro Hospital for
her anti-rabies vaccine.
She will be celebrating her 73rd birthday this
December 12, 2005. Recently, I discovered that mommy
can still read. When I showed her the letter of one
of her former co-teachers in Novaliches High School,
she was really very happy. So I am sharing this
article now with you for you to greet her or say
something to her through email so I can show it also
to her. May you all have a blessed Christmas and a
Peaceful New Year. Thanks and may God bless us all!
Your friend in Christ, Enid"
GUADALUPE…My Mother

Photo Taken Last Year During the 72nd Birthday
of Mrs. Guadalupe Fernandez Pablico
Guadalupe Fernandez Pablico
is the name of my
mother. Yes, her name was taken from the calendar by
her mother because she was born on December 12,
1932. That was the usual practice of getting the
name of babies that time.
I never appreciated my mother's name. Perhaps it is
because I was given a unique name and because mommy
did not tell me the story of the Our Lady of
Guadalupe. I am not sure if she also knew about it
but I cannot ask her anymore because she is
suffering from dementia as a result of her stroke in
2001.
I was already a church-goer at the Our Lady of
Guadalupe Chapel since 1993 when I was still at Far
East Bank and Trust Company that time. I first read
the story of the Our Lady of Guadalupe when I got
one Novena Prayer Booklet of the Our Lady of
Guadalupe beside its big image at the lobby of
Makati Medical Center. That time my daughter was
confined there for her last chemotherapy. When I
read the story about this Lady, I was really blessed
and fascinated. Yes, the Lady is really a miraculous
one. She was miraculous to the uncle of Juan Diego.
She is miraculous in the life of my mommy, in my
life and in the lives of many other people.
My Mom used to teach at Novaliches High School from
1965 to 1989. But when my dad died on December 20,
1989, due to cardio-vascular attack, her life became
hopeless and meaningless. She acquired enlargement
of the heart (ischimia) in March 1990. She was
confined in the ICU of Veterans Memorial Medical
Center for three weeks. We (my Kuya Eric, Ate Earl
and my youngest sister Elma) thought that mommy will
follow daddy that time but luckily, mom survived
that.
My Mom became vigorous again when my eldest sister
Earl got married in 1993. She then gave birth to a
bouncing baby boy in August 1994 so my mom was
ecstatic upon seeing her first "apo" of course. When
my Kuya Eric got married in 1994, she was again
elated seeing his only son getting married. However,
when my sister-in-law gave birth on October 21, 1995
to their first-born, who died only after 3 days, due
to complications in childbirth, my mom became
downhearted again. And on my Wedding Day - October
28, 2005 only seven days after, my family's grief
was still evident on what supposed to be one of the
happiest days of my life.
I gave birth to our first-born on August 13, 1997.
However, a year after, my daughter was diagnosed
with Acute Myelogeneous Leukemia. She died on July
1, 1999. Though, my Mom, has heart ailment, she has
accepted the death of my daughter. Mom had another
stroke in 2001. That time her stroke affected part
of her brain. The part of the brain that has
something to do with the synchronization of what we
think, say and do.
|
Mom had another stroke in
2003. This time, her left eye became cross-eyed and she became
"ngiwi". That time, I thought mommy will be taken from us. I
sincerely prayed to the Sacred Heart of Jesus at the Our Lady
of Guadalupe Chapel, that whatever the will of the Lord, be it
done unto her. I know mom has sufferred a lot and has gone
through a lot of trials in life and if it is her time to go, I
will let her go.
Recently, I showed her the letter I wrote when I
attended a retreat at Loyola Retreat House last February
24-27. I recalled these things from that letter:
"Thank you, mommy for teaching me to "SEEK FIRST THE
KINGDOM OF GOD, AND ALL SHALL BE ADDED UNTO YOU".
Thank you, mommy for teaching me that the highest
form of prayer is attending the HOLY MASS.
Thank you, mommy for teaching me the Golden Rule "DO
NOT DO UNTO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD NOT WANT OTHERS TO DO UNTO
YOU".
And Thank you, mommy for teaching me to sing "THE
DIGNITY OF LABOR"
Out in the world we are going
Striving in life glorious din.
Joy and success we are seeking
Trying to conquer and win.
Labor our best inspiration
God's gracious gift to mankind…
These are the only words that I can recall from this
song.
Perhaps, the mission of my
mommy in life is not yet finished that is why until now she is
still with us. She will be celebrating her 73rd birthday on
December 12, 2005.
HAPPY 73rd Birthday Mommy, we love you and we will
be forever thankful to you for what you have done in our
lives.
Thank you for the many things that you did not give
us because it will lead us to harm.
May God grant your earnest prayer. And may Our Lady
of Guadalupe continuously protect you with her maternal love
and protection.
God bless!
Your loving daughter,
ENID PABLICO-CASINO"
