Weekly Update: January 12, 2005

MEMBER ORIENTATION
By Chona Villafuerte-Go NHS Batch 1986
Website Administrator

Welcome once again to NHS Alumni On-line Community Weekly Update. We are happy to have you here with us! We take great pride in our Alma Mater Novaliches High School and are always glad to see new members joining us.

I have received a lot of inquiries the past weeks and thought it might be a lot easier for all of you and also for myself to summarize them and make it known to all of you thru "Membership Orientation".

The following orientation is designed to help you become acquainted with our On-line Community and also help you navigate through our website, but if you still have questions, please do not hesitate to ask and contact us at nhsqcalumni@verizon.net

WEEKLY UPDATE
You will now be able to stay on top of new additions and changes to our On-line Community thru our "Weekly Update" . This feature allows you to monitor any of our Message Board current posts, not just the changes on our On-line Community web site.

We have also added
"On Spotlight" featuring our very own members.   If you know of a fellow alumni who   have excelled and is distinguished on his field or profession or maybe a fellow alumni who have overcome certain adversities in life, PLEASE pass this information to us immediately.

Make your extraordinary alumni or NHS student known! Let's celebrate and inspire each other's uniqueness. As one community, we are a part of each other's successes for sharing parts of our lives with each other.

CALENDAR
Our Calendar have been updated few days ago. For internet security and member safety we shall be posting the month "ONLY" of our Registered Member Birthdays and Wedding Anniversaries until further notice. The exact dates of member birthdays and wedding anniversaries will still be available on our Password-protected Individual Class Year Directory. All registered members can post activities, special events, alumni reunion, reunion meetings, etc. by sending us an e-mail at nhsqcalumni@verizon.net or simply POST them on our Message Board under topic EVENTS!

Reminder: we have already posted January Birthday Celebrants on our Message Board, please take a moment and greet our fellow members on their special day. Thank YOU!

FOR NEW MEMBERS
We are delighted that you have joined us and trust that the benefits of membership will meet your expectations. We have entered December Registrations for the 2004 calendar year.

On-line Registered Members (with e-mails only) as of today, should have received a Welcome Letter with assigned username/password for our Password-protected Individual Class Year Directory and a default username/password for our Message Board,  plus all the other information that serves as your key to all of the wonderful services our On-line Community has to offer. Please keep that letter for your future reference and use it often.

As a registered member of NHS Alumni On-line Community, of which we are justifiably proud, we will try to send occasional mailings as well, miscellaneous announcements, and updates..

NHS Message Board
We are pleased to introduce our only interactive site feature, at the moment - NHSA Message Board (also known as bulletin board or forums). Information about our Message board feature is provided below. We really hope that you will visit the board, read the entries and become an active participant! This is just a start of many new features we hope to add on our On-line Community.

Message boards are a place where you can have conversations with other users over an extended period of time. As opposed to chats, where you can "talk" in real time, message boards allow you to post a comment for others to read at their convenience and then reply.
No registration is required to view and read the board entries. However, if you wish to actively participate which we are hoping YOU would, to reply or post a new topic you must be registered to login. And we have good news for YOU, as a registered member of our On-line Community you are automatically registered on our Message Board as well. We have provided you with a default username/password for login thru the welcome letter that you should have received after we process your on-line registration (Please refer to your welcome member letter, for details).

Currently there are fifteen categories. These categories are Forum Announcements, General, News, Events, I'm Looking For, NHS Memories, Teachers and School Administration, In Memoriam, Entertainment World, Around The House, Computer Lab, The Writer's Forum, Talk Show, Greetings and Photo Gallery. We are not limited to these categories, we can add as many as we wish. If you have any ideas please post them in the General category or contact us.

We hope you will enjoy our Message Board and to make this a thriving community we need your active participation.

How do I create a poll?
Creating a poll is easy -- when you post a new topic (or edit the first post of a topic, if you have permission) you should see a Add Poll form below the main posting box. If you cannot see this then you probably do not have rights to create polls. You should enter a title for the poll and then at least two options -- to set an option type in the poll question and click the Add option button. You can also set a time limit for the poll, 0 being an infinite amount. There will be a limit to the number of options you can list, which is set by the Administrator or the Moderator.

FORUM ETIQUETTE
The following are not just rules but also entails common user problems. There are some important issues covered here, ranging from images, to flaming, and other issues, all explained in detail or just noted upon. I will divide this post. More might be added in the future as the need arises.

1. Flaming
2. Posting Spam and Rubbish
3. Images and Direct Linking

ON SPOTLIGHT:

"Rachelle Erika Libunao Dancel"
Batch 2005
NHS Supreme Student Government President

Novaliches High School Students over the years lead (and in many cases, have also founded) a wide variety of cultural, academic and social organizations that give voice to their aspirations and interests.

This week, “On Spotlight”,
we’re very lucky to meet one of them…

Rachelle Erika Libunao Dancel will graduate from Novaliches High School this year 2005, where she is the current NHS Supreme Student Government President, COPE Sr. Peer Educator and The Reservoir-Circulation Editor. NHS has been very fortunate all these years to have a student body with an immense gift for succeeding. We are indeed proud of the hard work Rachelle put forth towards her own academic & leadership success.

She describes herself as being a little bit of everything – “lahat ng nasa gitna ako yoon”. She value friends so much and at times she says “pag may umaaway sa kanila ako pa ang nagiging tagapagtanggol nila”. She loves to meet new people, a positive-thinker as she simply puts it “ I don’t mind my problems, I let my problems mind me”.

From all of us NHS Alumni On-line Community Members, we say "Good Luck Rachelle and More Power to YOU!"

INVOLVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES:
We encourage all members to be involved in one or more of our Volunteer Team(s). Please look over our list and join those that interest you.

As you all know, we have also provided on our welcome member letter a list of current volunteer opportunities and they are as follows:

1) Forum Moderators
2) Lost Forum Committee Member
3) Tell A Friend Committee Member
4) Newsletter Committee Member
5) Message Board Contributor
6) Special Event Coordinator

Our “VT” (Volunteer Team) is currently organizing a campaign drive for all our registered members to determine their interest in volunteering. If you are interested and wanted to get involve, please contact us at nhsqcalumni@verizon.net

Or simply sign up for our Volunteer Team by sending us email to nhsqcalumni@verizon.net

Please note that we don't manage our volunteers; we just don't have the resources for that. We want self-starters and self-managers only.Laughing

1. Flaming
We prefer if it did not occur. If it ever comes down to it, and you are deciding whether to flame or not, remember, if the general populace think it was ridiculous, you will suffer the consequences. This also includes just swearing at someone or insulting them.
Please try to remember: insult the argument if you absolutely must, but not the person.
That concludes section 1.

2. Posting Spam and Rubbish
Quite simply, please do not do it. Spam will be deleted, or similar.

3. Images and Direct Linking
There are rules that govern this too, and they must be respected for several reasons, most of which are regulated by the sites you are linking from.

Direct Linking: This is allowed by several sites ONLY, since you are limiting their bandwidth and internet speed. Muck with them, and it becomes their issue, and I as your Website Administrator must by law give your information to them if you abuse their rights. No need to worry too much though, after all, most sites that do not like it, have safeguard procedures incase of Direct Linking.

Where Can I direct link from?: Try Imageshack.us for anything concerning uploading. Everyone should know about IS.us by now Very Happy
(Note: NHSA On-line Community is not in any way affiliated with Imageshack.us, we are just using their free resources!)

Censored Images:
These include images with swearing, extreme violence, sex scenes, and pornography. Potentially, 13 year olds may cruise our website so please consider them.

Banners: Some people may choose to place images into their signatures as well as posts. I have no problem with this, other than size. People do not want to load an inbedded wallpaper 7 times a day to see a few new posts of about 10 bytes each in size. Images are large in size, especially when compared to text.

56'kers still exist, so please respect them.

Signature Banner limitations
Image

Post Inbedded Images
Image

This is the only reasonable way to make sure everything stays within the size limits. Since images can be created with high resolution, which of course in turn uses up a lot more space, images such as this may be rejected.
Since banners cannot usually be direct linked off most sites, Imageshack.us is your best answer.

Another great annoyance is the pesky animations. I am referring of course, to banners and avatars. Today, there are many browsers which permit us to "Stop Animations", however, there are those still using browsers like IE, so
please refrain from using animations in posts. It distracts people from reading your posts. Smilies are still fine, since they are considered "a must", and because they are small, though anything else, please think about it before you post.

Another thing everybody.
Direct linking from: Geocites, Angelfire, Tripod does not work.

3.1 Avatars
Everybody, let it be known to you that this forum can convert avatars, from images as big as wallpapers, however people's connections can't, and neither can our tolerance of people who might try to do this. Please respect everyones' bandwidth, for there are some members and potential members stuck on 56K modems still.

Another thing, moving things that spin around constantly, or those that decide to change colours at random times are also very annoying again if present in banners and avatars.
It is hard reading a FAQ with something like this as an avatar:

Image

Or                          Image

That currently concludes everything about images.

4. Trolls & trolling
Treated just like spam, or worse. Do not do it.
So if you are a troll, or you are just wondering, you might wish to learn more about what trolling is...
And PLEASE! Don't say we didn't warn you, or not even sufficiently.

5. Message Board Moderators
Moderators are individuals whose job is to look after the running of the forums from day to day. They have the power to edit or delete posts and lock, unlock, move, delete and split topics in the forum they moderate. Generally moderators are there to prevent people going off-topic or posting abusive or offensive material.

Gerry Bayona Batch 1975 is our December '04 to January '05 Moderator.  Benjie Canonoy Batch 1984 would be taking his post next month February '05. Questions, concerns or suggestions are always encouraged.
Currently we are looking for volunteers in becoming a Forum Moderator. This wonderful “title” is now available to those who think they’re up for the job. If you are interested on this very rewarding “title”, please send us e-mail  at nhsqcalumni@verizon.net   indicating your interest and your schedule availability.  Thank you!

6.Contacting and Private Messaging (PM)
Private messaging at the moment was disabled because it does not fit the reason for this message board. This message board was intended for our On-line community so that members could use it in order to get their questions answered faster. We would rather you post your questions openly, instead of privately messaging each other. This we believe benefits everyone. Another reason why private messaging was also disabled is due to extra processing power and bandwidth.

And for those of you who wish to contact each other over private matters, please resort to email.

7.End Note
If there is anything you see not covered and thought maybe i should add, please e-mail me at nhsqcadministrator@verizon.net  or at nhsqcalumni@verizon.net
Additionally, if there’s a topic you’d like presented on our Message Board & Newsletter, or if you know of an excellent writer from our fellow alumni members,  please pass this information to us immediately.

I am continuously working on several ideas for our On-line community which I am hoping to share them with you soon.
Please help us spread the word by telling your family and friends about our site.

Again, thank you for your support and your active participation in our programs and events.
