Top 10 Excuses Not
to Attend Your
High School Reunion
(and why you should go
anyway...)
1. I have to work.
(Get time off –
if they won’t allow it
then you might as well quit!
Guess there’s no point
in staying…)
2. The kids are in school.
(They won't mind if you
go without them.)
3. I didn't like you then,
why would I like you now?
(We've changed! )
4. I prefer to remember
the class the way we were.
(We haven't changed a bit)
5. My tastes have matured.
(Don’t worry we'll make sure
to hire
The Booze Stop Bar
to do the trick!)
6. I was a loser in
high school.
(Then nobody remembers
- here's your second
chance to make a great
first impression)
7. I haven't lived up
to my potential.
(Whatever)
8. I've gained weight.
(You're not the only one -
don't worry there is not
going to be a
swimsuit competition)
9. I'm on the NBI’s
"Most Wanted" list.
(Don't worry - we have a
strict "Don't Ask, Don't Tell
Policy - what happens at
the reunion stays
at the reunion)
10. I'm in denial about
being out of high school
20 years.
(If you'd like,
we'll tell everyone you
didn't graduate yet.)

Father’s Day is this coming Sunday, June 19, 2005.
Father's Day is a day of commemoration and celebration of Dads.
A
day to not only honor our fathers, but all men who have acted as a
father figure sometime in our lives - whether as Stepfathers, Uncles,
Grandfathers, "Big Brothers", or even our very own teachers.
To All Fathers out there, Happy Father’s Day!!
I hope you will indulge me if I use this column to pay a special tribute
this Father’s Day to a person close to the hearts of many of our alumni
members...
To Mr. Cesar Sta. Maria
(whom I know with more familiarity in my own
head as "Sir")
is a person I very much respect and admire and
would like to offer a Father’s Day Tribute to.
A Special Father’s Day Tribute to Mr. Cesar Sta. Maria
(NHS Faculty Member until the year 1984)

AMELIA & MR. CESAR
STA. MARIA

Mr. Cesar Sta. Maria is a tremendous asset to the Novaliches High School
Community. His former students, our fellow NHS alumni are only but a
part of his legacy, trying to carry on with shared values, adapting well
to other situations. Certainly many of whom want to celebrate his life
in the struggle….many are thanking him for all he does and for who he
is.
In one of Sta. Maria’s e-mail he wrote me:
"Your name
sounds very familiar to me and if you took Theatre Arts for your
elective subject in the second year you must be in the same class with
Archie, Jake, Soledad and few more who were interested in that
particular subject. That was in 1984 the year when I left NHS for a
greener pasture so it appeared that your batch was my last and never saw
you during your graduation,”
and well I wasn’t on
his class then, I took the Math elective versus his Theatre Arts class
that year 1984, his supposedly last year in NHS. And frankly, I don’t
recall to have ever met "Sir" personally & that I don't
think I knew anything about him at all until only the last couple of
days thru our e-mail exchanges.
Then why am I so drawn to him, grateful to him and inspired by his
deeds, words and spirit?
In part it is the life of
commitment that Mr. Cesar Sta. Maria has led and continues to lead.
On his e-mail
message for our message board he wrote:
"During my last trip I had a reunion with
several alumni of batch 1967, 1968, 1969. 1973 up to 1984 but just quite
a few of them. That was when I left NHS. This time I am looking forward
to meet more and organize a much bigger reunion.
The head of the organization is Atty. Bienvenido Laguesma of batch 1967
and former secretary of Labor during Erap time."
From training to organizing to teaching to inspiring; from working and
mentoring others; from all these works, he brings his love as an
educator to everything he does. He further wrote,
"Yes,
Jonas Maceda was a guest in our house for dinner with his relatives.
Yes, Archie Penamante is my neighbor just a few blocks away.. He is
always welcome to eat dinner with us with pabaon pa ng diunuguan,
sinigang and fresh lumpia. A group composed of Ike Calicdan and his wife
Florita Llarinas, Beth Daez and Rosie Lingat, Carol Calicdan and Raul
Villanueva , all NHS alumni of batch 1973 came by for dinner for two
occasions at our house last April of this year.
We enjoy entertaining friends and former students
from way, way back. You are all welcome!"
Still according to "Sir",
“My heart still belongs to NHS and just to show my
appreciation I actually hosted a Faculty /Alumni reunion sometime last
Jan. before I left the country….” His wife, children & grandchildren,
his NHS past and long-time NHS friendships over the years…These are just
so many parts of his world that he has been able to share the many.
After NHS, he transferred to Holy Child Academy serving as their school
principal and 4 years after he migrated to the US. And true to his
words, "Sir" can never forget our alma mater as he further wrote me:"From then on my contact with NHS was through some English teachers
and friends like Miss Tiong, Miss Cruz and Mrs. Lugod. But, every time
we are back home we never fail to visit them at NHS. In fact during my
last visit I was invited as a guest in their Foundation Day
Celebration...".
It's pretty amazing to have gained so much respect for someone
without ever meeting him in person. And even though our contact has been
limited to the internet, I really feel that I have spent many hours
sitting with him in class, listening to his lectures and staring back at
the NHS halls & a classroom filled with students once again…just
reminiscing the good old days!
Along with his lifelong teaching commitment, his feisty rebellious
spirit, "Sir" is also known for his fundamental gentleness and kindness.
He was very much so like a father figure for a lot of NHS alumni. I have great admiration really for his ability to remember a
lot of NHS alumni for so many decades ago as he wrote thanking me for
posting his e-mail on our Message Board he said,“I am busy right now preparing for my trip this Sunday. In fact
I did one last shopping before I open my computer. With the many E-mails
pouring in I almost could not keep up. Graduates from 35 years ago are
sending me their E-mails including those I never expected to remember me
and those that I really would like to contact before are the ones doing
their first move. Among them are Frank Page, Angelo George Calicdan,
Rey Sta. Mina and many more….” .
In each e-mail communication he sends me, it brought about a spirit of
commitment to our alma mater and surely not wrapped up in promoting
himself. It is ironic because now that he is having his own battle and
that perhaps he is dwelling on his own struggles. But instead he remains
on our minds educating us and still raises our thoughts to the struggles
of many others he inspired.
From his letters and from his words, I very much appreciate his values,
his NHS pride, courage and moral strength. For all these reasons and
more, I celebrate "Sir" and would like to thank him for
what he has shared and for the life he is living.
But it is really hard to believe that "Sir" Sta. Maria, too, are human and
capable of becoming ill. It’s hard to imagine that
someone as strong and determined as he, is now facing what could be a
serious challenge in his life. It’s just so sad to hear that he’s going
through a tough time and recovery process right now which I sincerely
hope that he regain his health and strength back once again and very
soon!
We wish you all the very best "Sir", and know that your strong spirit will see
you through this time.
Our thoughts and prayers have been and continue to be with you Mr. Sta.
Maria.... Our love to you and the family.
|
To a wonderful educationist
...serves as a father-figure for many,
a father and a grandfather -
Mr. Cesar Sta. Maria ("Sir")
,
&
To All The Other Fathers out there,
HAPPY, HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!
GOD BLESS!! |
